RE: Grime Mystery

Thank you all for your help.
In response to bondebond, although I haven't modified the PUP you have made me think of something. I store a couple of blankets, pillows, and even a solar cell on the cushions of collapsed dinette. These things could be forcing the tent material closer to the suspended screen door. Hmmm...
No way to safely clean it though?
Thanks again,
KC

Grime Mystery

Hello all. I hope everyone is doing well. Here's my question.
I have an '06 Fleetwood Niagara and I am getting these mysterious black markings on the inside of the tent material on the "ceiling" of my slideout dinette. My current hypothesis is that during travel the tent material is rubbing against the screen door (which is suspended from the ceiling (while popped down) in about the same place). Perhaps some oxidation is coming off the aluminum and transferring to the tent material.
Has anybody seen anything like this? Any ideas about the cause or how to stop it? Is there a good way to clean these markings off?
Thanks in advance.

Thetford Tote Sewer Connections

Does anybody know a simple way to connect one of these:
www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/thetford-smarttote-lx-portable-waste-tank-18-gallon/37870
To one of these (or something similar to stick in the hole at the dump station):
www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/ez-coupler-90-bayonet-fitting/27867
I'm embarrassed but I can't seem to find anything off the shelf. Am I missing a piece of the puzzle? (as usual)
Thanks for your help and time.

RE: Waste Water Tote

Thanks for the assistance. What I meant by "...handle the contents of my fresh tank..." is that I have about a 20 Gallon fresh-water tank (plus the 6 in the hot water heater). I'm thinking that the 18 gallon waste water tote will keep me in business without being too cumbersome. My challenge is that I believe I can lift the 12 gallon version into the back of my SUV. Or, "tow" the 18 gallon version. I think the 18 would be a bit heavy and cumbersome to try and move too far by hand (especially into the back of the SUV).

Sorry,
Links, like Waste-Water Totes, baffle me a bit. What I am trying to link to is at Campingworld.com. Catalog item 37870. Thetford SmartTote LX Portable Waste Tank. 18 Gallons.
Thanks again.

Waste Water Tote

Has anyone ever used or had any experience with one of these:
http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm/Outdoor-and-RV-Accessories/37870/skunum=37870:src=SRQB
In a campground with a dump station I like the idea of being able to tow this around. However, it looks like it would get pretty heavy if towing isn't realistic. I'm thinking of using this for both Gray and Black; and it should pretty much handle the entire contents of our fresh water tank (give or take).
Thoughts? Expreiences? Better ideas?
Thanks.

RE: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESS

I am about to start using my LGVX 8350R as a modem (tethered to my laptop) and Verizon's $59.99/Month Data Plan for Internet Access while on the road. I'm also thinking about an external antenna. This one in particular: http://www.wilsonelectronics.com//ViewProductB.php?ID=24
Does anyone know if these external antennas are any good? Ideas? Thoughts? Stuff I should know?
Thanks

RE: Internet Service While RV'ing

After reading through this thread I actually looked at my Sierra Wireless Aircard 875 (Cingular/AT&T Service) for my laptop and noticed that there is indeed a port for an external antenna. At the risk of covering old ground: Do the external antennas help? Is there a preferred model/manufacturer or setup for such an antenna? Anything I should avoid?
Thanks.

RE: Bear Country in a PUP - Advice?

Do the same precautions apply to hard-sided trailers?
P.S. I have an 80 pound golden retriever.

RE: Bear Country in a PUP - Advice?

Thanks all. In reply to KKnowlton. I'll be near the Tetons, not in the national park, but in the forest, somewhere...
With respect to putting food in the tow vehicle, I thought Bears broke into cars and trucks at will?
No cooking of Hamburgers, bacon or vegetables? Did I read that right? What's left?
No cooking in the PUP? Wow, that just leaves the RVQ I guess. And I guess I'll need to hang that from a tree as well.
What is the best bear repellent?
My wife is already a little nervous and now it's getting to me a bit.

RE: New Verizon Broadband plan

Interesting discussion. I just wish I understood more of it. Here's my question.
I work remotely full time and between my Cingular/ATT Blackberry and my Cingular/ATT Aircard for my laptop I can pretty much stay on top of things while I'm on the road in my RV. I do a ton of Email, send word and PDF files back and forth, use netmeeting, talk on the phone a lot, and occasionally look up and download info from the web. My employer pays for these toys, and, generally, they work pretty well. However, as everyone knows, Cingular/ATT don't get coverage everywhere. I'm considering purchasing a seperate Aircard service on my own nickel (Verizon perhaps)to expand the areas where I can get both data and phone coverage. Any thoughts on how to find a service that best compliments what I've already got with ATT/Cingular?
Most of my travels are in the western U.S.
Thanks

Bear Country in a PUP - Advice?

I'm getting ready to take my Niagara into bear country (Wyoming). I will be boondocking (no campgrounds) in isolated areas. I'm familiar with the basics about how to keep bears at bay; however, I would appreciate input from anyone with experience (not many bears where I come from in the desert). Repellants, bear boxes, tying everything(?) up into a tree, food/toiletries in TV or not, other tips, etc...
Thanks.

RE: Cold Bunk Ends

Beacher,
Thanks for the info on oxidation of Reflectix foil insulation. I checked Camping World and didn't see any alternatives. I checked Google and was quickly overwhelmed. Would you be willing to recommend a manufacturer or product name?

RE: What battery charger?

Wow. Lots of approaches and information. This is very helpful, if not a bit confusing to me. Thanks. One question though.
My question: If I disconnect the batteries from the trailer, and plug in a portable charger to a generator, how do I determine how big of a generator I need to have???
I'd love to be able to re-charge at 30+ Amps, but I'm really only considering a 1000 or so watt generator (Honda or Yamaha). I'd like to buy a Vector 35 or 40 amp smart charger, but I don't know if I can run one on a small generator.
Thanks again.

RE: Genny Help

Thank you. Assuming I have the proper wiring (factory installed) and the WSCO 35 amp convertor, and everything else is turned off in the trailer, any general idea how many amps will go back into the battery for each hour of generator run time?

RE: Genny Help

O.K. I must admit I have to show my ignorance before I do something silly. I'm trying to decide between one of two Honda Generators (EU2000i and EU1000i). My purpose for buying one of these two is to quietly top off my batteries each morning after the previous day's usage. Here's my question.
When I read the specs of the two units they both appear to have the same DC output (96 watts, 8 Amps). Does this mean that if I use these units to re-charge my batteries directly the maximum Amp Hours I can replace is 8 amps per hour of generator run time? Irrespective of which unit I buy?
On the AC side the EU1000i spec says it creates 7.5 Amps (900 Watts) and the EU2000i spec says it creates 13.3 Amps(1600 Watts). Does this mean that if I plug my trailer directly into either generator as shore power the most I can "put back" into my batteries is 7.5 Amps/Hour (EU1000i) or 13.3 Amps/Hour (EU2000i)?
Can these numbers be increased if I use a seperate battery charger? (instead of the "generator shore power" or the "generator-direct-to-battery" setup).
Needless to say I'm a bit confused by all of this.
Thanks for your time.

RE: Genny Help

Thanks for the advice. The wire runnung to the the batteries from the converter looks to be 12 guage. The run is about 6 feet. My goal is to run the generator the absolute minimum amount of time I can get away with and still keep the batteries up (I really don't need the genny to do anything else (I don't think)- our coffee is stove top). The 2000 Watt Generator may be just a bit too big for me in terms of size and weight. My initial thought was that the batteries would get more Amps per hour by plugging a charger (25 amp? - I haven't bought it yet - suggestions?) directly to the positive terminal of one of the parallel batteries and the negative terminal of the other battery. That said, if the converter can support 35 amps (I do have an '07 Fleetwood), it does seem to make sense to plug the trailer directly into the generator and skip the charger altogether. Thoughts?
Thanks again. This forum is absolutely invaluable.
